As passage tombs illustrate, the winter solstice was indeed a big deal (and rightly so) long before anybody thought that a virgin might bear a child. For me, Xmas is a multicultural nonsectarian celebration of the solstice. It proclaims the hope that light will replace darkness, in more ways than one. Merry Xmas!
