I’m glad your sparrow escaped. I live in a 4th floor apartment with an oak tree out my window. Such thuds happen frequently. Not a dead bird yet that I know of.
We have doves who do this. They startle easily and hit the door as they scatter, leaving a mark. Once in a while one is killed. But most often it’s no worse than stunned for a while. This poem says it perfectly.
Yes, that happens at our two large back windows too, the ghost outline of the bird (usually for us it is doves). An owl would be so impressive. I always look below the window when I see one of these prints, to check for a bird fallen to the ground, but unless I hear the thump and get there immediately, the bird is usually gone. Hopefully ok.
Very well crafted haiku, Bill. Had a sparrow try to make a beeline through a french door and a window to the bush around the house. Alas neither were opened. It learned not to do that again.
I get bugs who do that but have never had a bird do that accidentally. There was however a blackbird that decided to sit on the ledge and tap on our window for like a week! That was interesting!

Oh dear, hope it was alright. We often get birds thump into the window – usually pigeons, to date none seriously hurt.

Many thanks. The smaller birds seem to get off worse. I once had the imprint of an owl with outstretched wings on a window, no sign of the bird.

Bugs would be ok. That blackbird probably thought the reflection was a rival, typical territorial male!
