Good question. I’ve often wondered, when the temp has been -40 for several days, if the sparrows are shivering or if they can actually stay warm all puffed up like they are. But they do survive. 🙂
It is a good question, Bill. I’ve read that they have some sort of special ‘covering’ on their little feet. Don’t quote me on that!, but it gives me comfort when I see these little birds perched on thin bare branches in the below-freezing weather.

I think they restrict the blood flow in their legs to ease the cold. As a warm weather bird, It makes me shiver to think of it.
